Chapter 00 — The canopy
Where the green begins to breathe.
Come in at the height of the trees, where the rain is decided and almost nothing that lives up here ever goes down. Far off through the trunks there is a light that should not be there.
Descend↓01 — The understory
Twenty metres down, the light arrives in coins.
Selva begins where the sky stops. Under the canopy only a coin or two of every hundred of sunlight reaches the ground, so everything down here has learned to want less: leaves the size of tables, ferns older than flowers, roots that walk across the floor looking for a place to stand.
The air is a held breath at ninety percent humidity. Nothing dries. A branch that falls is soil within the year. Somewhere off to the left a big one came down — you can see the plate of roots it tore up, standing on end, taller than you are, still holding its clods of earth. That is how a clearing gets made here. Walk slowly: the floor is not a floor, it is a roof for something else.

02 — The river
The water keeps the only calendar.
There are no seasons here that a coat would notice. There is the river low and the river high, and between them a difference of ten metres — whole forests standing to their shoulders in water for half the year, fish swimming between the trunks, seeds carried where no wind could take them.
At night the surface goes black and takes the moon in one piece, and the moon comes back as a path of sparks you could almost walk on. Follow the water. Every path in this forest was a river first — including the one that ends at the light down there, which is not a fire anybody lit this century.

03 — The ruin
Stone that learned to be a tree.
Somebody built this. Levelled the ground, laid the plaza, cut sixty-one steps, carved the face over the fountain, set two palaces facing each other across the court. Then the forest came back the way it always does — not in a rush, one root at a time — until the strangler figs held the lintels up better than the masons had. Moss keeps the stone wet; the wet keeps it green; the green is why it is still standing.
The walk pauses here for as long as you like. Nothing in the ruin is going anywhere. Neither, for the next few minutes, are you.

A face the size of a door, water pouring from its mouth into a basin the fish found first.

The stair la escalera
Sixty-one steps, each one worn into a bowl. Count them on the way up; you won't on the way down.

The roots las raíces
Where the fig has taken the doorway. Put your hand on it. It is warmer than the stone.

The cistern la cisterna
Green water, absolutely still, a moon in it. The only mirror for fifty kilometres.

04 — The fireflies
At night the forest turns its lights on.
Past the ruin the trees open into a clearing, and the clearing is full of a slow, cold fire: thousands of beetles making light out of chemistry, nearly all of it light and almost none of it heat. Each species blinks its own sentence. Stand still long enough and they will use you as a tree.
This is where the walk gets quiet. You are still on the paving — it runs out here, under the ferns, a course at a time. At the far side of the clearing a disc the height of a house stands on its edge, bronze gone green, gold where the gold held on, a face in the middle of it. The one thing they made of metal, and the beetles use it as a tree. Something with a very red throat watches from a leaf, unbothered, exactly the colour of a warning.
05 — First light
And then, without announcement, morning.
The walk lifts back through the leaves and turns around, and from up here you can finally see the shape of it: the plaza, the two long roofs facing each other, and the comb of the temple breaking the canopy where an hour ago you were standing at the bottom of the steps. The river goes off west, a strip of tin. Howlers start up somewhere east. All of it is still going, whether or not anyone is watching. That was the point.
